This project will present a live performance of Paul Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler, one of his best-known orchestral works. Inspired by the life and work of the painter Matthias Grünewald, the music reflects themes of art, faith and the challenges faced by individuals during a difficult period in history. So there.

The project will bring musicians together to rehearse and perform this substantial twentieth-century work for a live audience. Funding will help cover the costs of preparing and presenting the performance, including musicians’ fees, rehearsal time, venue hire and other practical expenses.

Support from donors will make it possible to bring Hindemith’s music to the stage and offer audiences the opportunity to experience this important repertoire in concert.

The Northbridge Philharmonic Orchestra is a regional orchestra founded in 1987. It performs several concerts each year, bringing together musicians from across the surrounding area, with a repertoire spanning the eighteenth century to the present day.

The performance will be conducted by Daniel Mercer, who has worked with orchestras and ensembles in the UK and Europe. After studying music at university, he continued his conducting training through masterclasses and workshops. He has a particular interest in twentieth-century music and has conducted works by a number of composers from the period.

The orchestra’s leader, Sarah Whitmore, is a freelance violinist whose work encompasses orchestral performance, teaching and chamber music. She has performed in a variety of venues and is involved with several local musical organisations.

Together, the musicians aim to give a thoughtful and accessible performance of Hindemith’s music, welcoming both regular concertgoers and those encountering the work for the first time.
