About this project

Cork's youth brass band plays entirely on donated instruments — a practical, low-cost model that has worked for years, but seven of the band's cornets and horns are now dented, leaking or otherwise unplayable, leaving several young players sharing one working instrument between two or three of them.

Brassworks Renewal funds proper restoration — dent removal, valve reconditioning and re-lacquering where needed — for those seven instruments, carried out by a local brass repair workshop.

Restoring existing instruments costs a fraction of buying new ones, and keeps donated instruments that already have a history with the band in service rather than replacing them outright.

Why this project matters

Several young players are currently sharing instruments because seven in the band's stock are unplayable; restoration is far cheaper than replacement.

About the creator

Séamus Byrne trained as a brass instrument repair technician and has run Cork's youth brass band as a volunteer for six years, keeping the band's donated instrument stock playable on a minimal budget.

People involved

Séamus Byrne (project lead), a Cork-based brass repair workshop (to be contracted on funding), and the 24 young members of the youth brass band.

How the funding will be used

Full restoration, four cornets: €1,800. Full restoration, three tenor horns: €1,900. Replacement mouthpieces and cases: €500.

If the target is not reached

At the minimum amount, the four cornets (the instruments currently most shared) would be restored first, with the three tenor horns following as funds allow.

Risks and possible delays

Some instruments may need more extensive work than an initial assessment suggests; if so, the number of instruments restored in this phase would be reduced rather than the standard of repair.

Supporter rewards and acknowledgements

€10 — a thank-you card signed by the band. €25 — the above plus an invite to the band's next public performance. €60 — the above plus your name on a small supporter plaque in the band's rehearsal room.

Existing support

The repair workshop has offered a reduced community rate for the work; no funds have yet been raised toward the restoration itself.
